FITNESS

Chair Yoga for Independence: Chair yoga works to improve muscle and joint strength using light weights and bands with an emphasis on balance for fall prevention and to help one maintain independence.

Josh’s Fitness Group: Fitness equals independence. All actions are one or more of the 5 following movements - push, pull, twist, squat and lunge. Exercising the muscles that control those movements will help us continue to open and shut doors, get dressed, sit down on and get up from a chair, and all the other things that comprise the Activities of Daily Living. Our ability to perform these Activities are necessary to maintain our independence. $

Kundalini Yoga: The yoga of awareness. Kundalini Yoga utilizes breath, sound, exercise, relaxation and meditation to elevate your mind, body, and spirit. Come to stretch, strengthen, energize and relax through the practice of this ancient art. Please bring a mat or a towel. Special consideration is given to beginner level students. Can also accommodate people in chairs. Baldwin Hills only. $

Mat Yoga: Yoga can increase energy levels and flexibility and has been known to alleviate discomfort from back pain, neck problems, and sciatica. Yoga may also help with control of diabetes, high blood pressure, and asthma. Many problems associated with aging such as circulatory disorders, arthritis and digestive complaints are a result of lack of exercise and shallow breathing. Yoga can help alleviate these complaints.

Move Stretch & Tone*: Exercise to upbeat music to increase muscle strength, range of movement and improve activities for daily living. This type of exercise is great for your heart, bones, and mind. Exercises can be modified depending on your fitness levels. $

Shake It Up: Get ready to move and groove to energetic, fast-paced rhythms in a lively, party-like atmosphere. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced dancer, this class is designed for all levels, encouraging everyone to let loose, have fun, and embrace the music in a vibrant, upbeat environment.

Strength Training: Are you ready to take your fitness to the next level this year? Look no further than Coach Jonathan's strength-building program! With his expert guidance, you'll be on your way to building a stronger you.

Tai Chi & Qigong: Build and maintain leg strength and balance, maintain flexibility, and reduce stress with the gentle rhythmic movements of Tai Chi and Qigong. $

Taiji In Harmony: Also known as Tai Chi, Taiji is a gnetle exercise that helps improve balance, prevent falls and more! Available for beginners and intermediate/advanced. $

Total Fitness*: You will be led through a full body workout. All major muscle groups will be addressed as well as your cardiovascular fitness. You will leave feeling confident that you spent your time wisely! Classes are modified for all fitness levels.

World of Dance & Movement: Explore various dance styles and movement techniques from around the globe designed to enhance participants' physical coordination, flexibility, and rhythm, while also offering an enriching cultural experience through movement. Enjoy dance as a movement for the soul, mind, and body.

Zumba for the Soul: If you like to dance or move, get going with Zumba! Learn Zumba movements as you listen to great music with a great beat. Bring water and a towel.

 

LANGUAGE

Español in a Sweet Capsule: Spanish*: Spanish encapsulated will enable you to start communicating with the Spanish speaking world immediately! Enjoy fun dialogues, stories and plays whether you’re just starting or brushing up on the learning of Spanish. It’s fun! $

Poetry Workshop*: Explore and analyze works from renowned poets, diving deep into their themes, techniques, and styles. This workshop will encourage you to draw inspiration from their poetry, allowing you to craft your own poems. Whether you’re an experienced writer or just starting out, the supportive environment will help you find your voice and express your creativity through verse. $

Wednesday Book Club*: Join this engaging, moderator-led virtual book club for a lively discussion on a carefully curated selection of books. Each month, a new title is chosen, offering an opportunity to explore different genres, authors, and themes. Whether you're a seasoned reader or just getting started, the club welcomes all participants for an enriching conversation. Meets once a month, providing a relaxed and enjoyable way to connect with fellow book lovers.

Thursday Book Club*: Join us for a lively, moderator-led virtual book club where participants engage in thoughtful discussions about a curated selection of books. Each month, we explore a new title, offering insights, perspectives, and a deeper appreciation for the works we read. This book club meets once a month, providing a great opportunity to connect with fellow book lovers and share your thoughts in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

 

WELLNESS

Acupuncture: A traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to promote healing and balance. It’s used to stimulate the body’s energy flow, known as "Qi," and can help alleviate pain, reduce stress, and treat various physical and mental health conditions. By Appointment; Thursdays only.

Brain Boosters: Join us for a cognitive workout with practical exercises focusing on attention and short-term memory.

UCLA Health Lectures*: A series of informative health lectures hosted by UCLA doctors and specialists, covering a wide range of topics related to physical and mental well-being. These lectures are designed to educate the public on the latest advancements in healthcare, preventive measures, treatment options, and overall wellness. Participants can gain insights from leading experts in various medical fields, providing valuable information to help improve their health and make informed decisions about their well-being.

 

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Chorale: Lift your voice and sing with the Chorale - a collective of singers who come together to sing a diverse repertoire led by a conductor who guides the singers in achieving harmony and expression in their performances, creating a rich and cohesive musical experience. Baldwin Hills only.

Lines & Layers: Unleash your creative potential in this engaging and beginner-friendly drawing class led by an experienced architect. You'll explore the fundamentals of drawing, learning techniques to bring your ideas to life on paper while fostering your creativity in a supportive and relaxed environment. Whether you're new to art or looking to rekindle your passion for drawing, this class is the perfect opportunity to discover the joy of expressing yourself through lines and layers.

Rock Painting: Discover the joy of turning everyday stones into unique works of art in this engaging and creative class. Perfect for beginners, this activity requires no prior experience—just bring your imagination and a willingness to experiment. You'll learn basic techniques for painting, decorating, and sealing your designs to create lasting treasures, whether for home decor, gifts, or simply as a fun, relaxing pastime.

 

SOCIAL

Bingo: Bingo is a fun, easy-to-play game where participants match randomly drawn numbers to a pre-printed card. The goal is to complete a specific pattern, such as a row, column, or diagonal, and shout "Bingo” when the pattern is achieved. It’s a great game for social gatherings, and it’s often played for prizes or just for fun! $

Bridge: Playing Bridge, as well as being fun, helps retain mental sharpness. Research show that Bridge benefits overall well-being. Players will be socially engaged and cognitively challenged. A competitive game for experienced players. Knowledge of bidding conventions and expertise in the play of the hand required. $

  • Let’s Play Bridge:  New players welcome. Lessons provided. Veteran players improve your skills with supervised play.

  • Duplicate Bridge: More advanced players.

Jewelry Making for a Cause: Join us for a meaningful and creative experience where you can craft beautiful jewelry while supporting a worthy cause. This hands-on workshop invites participants of all skill levels to design and assemble unique piece. Whether you’re a seasoned jewelry maker or a beginner, your time and effort will help create something beautiful that can positively impact lives. Together, let's change the world, one bead at a time.
