Finding a Nursing Home
The following resources provide information that can be helpful in finding or selecting a nursing home or long-term care facility.- The California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform offers an online Nursing Home Guide with in-depth information on the more than 1,400 nursing homes in California. The guide includes comparisons, violation information, staffing and services.
- California Registry is a state-licensed, free referral agency for seniors and their families. Founded in 1939, it provides care options, counseling, referrals and facility evaluations free of charge. They have up-to-date information on more than 7,500 facilities in California. They also provide information by phone at (800) 777-7575.
- Medicare offers a national nursing home database called “Nursing Home Compare” that can be searched by city, county, state, zip code or nursing home name. This resource provides information about the nursing homes, the type of residents who live there and the results of the latest inspection. Medicare also offers a similar database for hospitals and home health agencies.
- Medicare also offers a 64-page ”Guide to Choosing a Nursing Home” that can be downloaded. A checklist to use in evaluating a nursing home is also available from Medicare.
